Rugs, reinvented.
Ali Nikrooz
Ali came to the rug business in the early 2000s through a trip to Europe and his uncle, who showed him a world in transition. Makers from Nepal, Tibet, Germany, Scotland, and beyond were bringing contemporary design sensibilities to one of the oldest crafts in human history.
The rugs being produced were genuinely new: innovative in design, uncompromising in quality, and almost entirely unknown to American consumers. The most exceptional lines in the world were scattered across international showrooms, inaccessible to anyone without deep industry connections. Ali set out to change that.
Since opening Couture Knots in Charlotte, he has spent years building direct relationships with the world's most remarkable rug makers — traveling to meet them, earning their trust, and in many cases becoming their sole representative in the United States. The result is a collection that brings together more than 20 lines, many available exclusively through Couture Knots, all handmade, all under one roof.
Craft, Knot by Knot
Every rug at Couture Knots is made entirely by hand — no machines, just the labor and expertise of artisans translating new designs into a centuries-old tradition.
In Nepal, weavers work with Tibetan Highland Wool, fiber from sheep that graze at altitude in the Himalayan Steppe. The harsh environment produces wool with exceptional lanolin content, giving the finished rug its characteristic sheen, resilience, and natural stain resistance. That wool is cleaned, spun, dyed, and mapped onto a computerized graph where every pixel represents a single knot.
Then the weavers begin. Seated side by side at a loom, they follow the map knot by knot, each one placed by hand, each one customizable in color, material, and quality. A 10 by 14 foot rug at standard quality contains roughly two million knots; at the finest quality, three million. The work takes four to five months. The result lasts generations.
Materials extend beyond wool: silk for sheen and luminosity, aloe and nettle for texture, cactus fiber for structure, cashmere for unparalleled softness. Every specification — pile height, finishing technique, fringe, shape — is determined before a single knot is tied.
Ethics & Service
Couture Knots is the first rug showroom in the United States to be certified by Label STEP, the Swiss fair trade organization dedicated to the well-being of weavers and workers in the handmade carpet industry. STEP certification means rigorous supply chain audits, verified fair trade standards, and active support for the communities producing these rugs. When you invest in a rug from Couture Knots, you know exactly where it came from and that the people who made it were treated with dignity.
That same standard of care extends to every client. Every visit begins the same way: with a conversation. Ali takes the time to understand the space, the client, and the vision, then draws on his entire collection to find the right answer.
The showroom holds hundreds of samples spanning every aesthetic, quality level, texture, and budget. Any sample can be made to order in any size, shape, or custom specification. For clients who want to see a change before committing, a digital rendering or a physical strike-off sample can be produced in four to six weeks. For clients who cannot visit Charlotte in person, Zoom consultations are available. For projects of significant scale, Ali travels.
